Gamo designed their 4.5mm (.177 calibre) Pro Match Pellets for target shooting, specifically for competition and also serious training. Their special alloy composition ensures the tightest shot groups, minimum lead fouling and more consistent shots. High quality pellets for shooters seeking performance, but at a good price. With 500 pieces per pack, you have plenty of air rifle ammunition for extended training sessions. These lightweight pellets perform best in break barrel, pump-action and low power PCP air rifles, as well as pistols. Importantly, the stable trajectory and minimal deviation is essential for competition shooting.
Shooters participating in 10-metre competitions or regularly training on target cards will appreciate the consistent performance. For more powerful PCP systems, we recommend considering heavier alternatives for optimal performance.
Of course, the 7.56 grain (0.49 gram) weight is specially selected for accuracy and consistency. The Wadcutter (flat nose) pellet shape creates clean, precise holes in target cards, making scoring easier and more accurate.
Pellet Testing
Testing different brands, head sizes and grain weights remains important for optimal accuracy, as every air rifle and pistol responds differently. A chronograph can help measure the exact energy output of your air rifle or pistol to find the best match in terms of weight. When it comes to head size, shooters need to test a variety of pellets to find the best possible match to their rifle or pistol.
These Gamo Pro Match pellets are a great starting point and budget option. In many high-end rifles and pistols, though, you may get best performance with premium brands like the JSB Match series. Testing is crucial if you’re looking to compete and pro-shooters even sort their pellets according to weight. Expert shooters believe it is vital to weigh and sort your pellets if you hope to be competitive in any type of airgun competition. Gently place your pellets on a soft surface, like a blanket or towel. Inspect individual pellets for deformation, especially at the skirt. You can weigh individual pellets with a suitable pellet scale to ensure your hand-picked batch is as consistent in weight as possible.
Pellet Care
The most common pellet damage today is deformation of the skirt. Many modern pellets have thin skirts that form a seal in the breech at low air pressure. Which is generally a good thing for energy efficiency. However, it does make the skirts more susceptible to damage.
The extreme velocity spread with damaged pellets through a PCP can be up to five times as great as with undamaged pellets. Damage to pellets will affect accuracy and consistency, so we highly recommend shooters avoid dirt, deformation and other damage that could impair pellet uniformity. Not only does moderate pellet skirt ovality dramatically increase group sizes, but it also makes pellets far more susceptible to wind drift. Deformed pellets are less stable in flight. The ballistic coefficient of deformed pellets are much lower, so they lose velocity more quickly and take longer to get to the target. So, the effect of the wind will last for a longer period.
It is generally speaking “safe” to use mildly deformed pellets insofar as it will not damage your air rifle. But, from the accuracy standpoint, it is most certainly not recommended to use mildly or even slightly deformed pellets.
For best results, keep your pellets free from dust and debris, like in a closed tin. Avoid shaking or dropping your pellets, and handle individual pellets with care. Even squeezing the skirts gently with your fingers could cause the round skirts to become oval.
