FORGE & FIELD APEX ELR .2175 40GR BOAT TAIL 200PCS
Introducing the air rifle slugs that set South Africa ablaze with excitement: the Forge & Field Apex ELR .2175 40gr Boat Tail 200PCS.
Boat tail slugs are, of course, extremely popular in National Rifle League (NRL) airgun competitions. It’s because their tapered rear design significantly increases aerodynamic efficiency, resulting in a higher Ballistic Coefficient (BC). The Apex ELR is no different. In fact, they boast a staggering 0.235 BC, tested and verified by some of South Africa’s best shooters. They provide a flatter trajectory, better resistance to wind drift at long distances, and improved stability through turbulent air, making them ideal for precision shooting.
These beautifully crafted airgun slugs are not just popular with NRL shooters. They’re also revered by Bench Rest shooters for their consistency and accuracy. By simply inspecting the craftsmanship and comparing to other popular boat tail slugs currently on the market, you’ll immediately notice differences. With Apex ELR, you get smoother, consistently forged slugs that outshine their competitors in virtually all aspects.
Superior Aerodynamics
Apex ELR’s purpose-designed tapered boat tail reduces drag, allowing the slug to maintain velocity over longer distances, which is critical for ELR (Extreme Long Range) shooting.
You get a combination of reduced base drag, higher retained velocity, and increased stability through the air. Their design narrows the base of the projectile, allowing air to flow more smoothly around it. The primary, largest component of drag on a projectile is “base drag,” which is caused by the low-pressure, turbulent wake (vortex) at the rear of a flat-based bullet. The tapered boat tail shrinks the diameter of the base, narrowing the turbulent wake and significantly reducing this drag.
Precision Swaging You Can See
Compared side-by-side to other leading brands, these slugs are flawless and identical, so you get absolute consistency, shot for shot. You can SEE the craftsmanship on the slugs themselves, as well as the results downrange.
Swaged slugs are generally superior to cast slugs for airgun performance, offering better accuracy, consistency, and higher ballistic coefficients. They are formed under high pressure, resulting in uniform density, tighter tolerances, and smoother, more concentric shapes that improve long-range performance compared to cast, which are often limited by weight variations and void risks.
Wind Resistance
Thanks to their appraised boat tail design, they are less susceptible to being blown off course by crosswinds.
The tapered shape allows the air to flow more gradually behind the bullet, preventing the immediate, sharp drop-off of pressure found behind flat-based bullets. This is essentially a “streamlining” effect that keeps the bullet moving faster with less resistance.
Improved Accuracy
These slugs provide superior, consistent, and stable flight, allowing for exceptionally small shot groups.
There are certain characteristics you need to focus on when designing and manufacturing airgun slugs. Forge & Field performed due diligence through both rigorous testing and relentless improvement. They focussed on various aspects like diameter, weight, length and shape, as well as material and finish. Additionally, they focussed on consistency in manufacturing, overcoming the common issue of vertical stringing.
By using premium air rifle slugs, you remove a variable that could cause point of impact changes. Knowing your ammunition is on point, you have fewer places to look for answers when your shot is off the mark.
Composition and Coating
Engineered with a unique and specialised lead composition and coating, these slugs are set to perform where it matters.
Both lead composition and coating significantly affect the accuracy and performance of airgun slugs. Because slugs have a much larger bearing surface (contact area) with the barrel compared to traditional diabolo pellets, they are more sensitive to variations in hardness, diameter, and friction.
Designed for accuracy, Apex Slugs are malleable enough to allow the rifling to engrave it easily, ensuring a perfect seal, which maximizes muzzle velocity and minimizes barrel leading. So, they prevent excessive fouling, improve velocity, and are visible in the scope for better target tracking.
Solid with Ideal Weight and Size
With a weight of 40 grain and 0.2175 sizing, these slugs provide the perfect seal and hit the true sweet spot for accuracy and reliability across a broad range of rifles.
Even for rifles that usually prefer either .217 or .218. Being a solid (non-hollow point) slug means higher sectional density and a better ballistic coefficient, both very important for consistency and accuracy.
High 0.235 BC
The Apex ELR Slugs boast a BC almost TWICE as high as other popular 40 grain slugs for exceptional long-range performance. This includes flatter trajectories, impressive wind resistance, high energy retention with devastating impact, and also laser-accuracy.
Because they are less affected by wind (wind drift is reduced) and have less vertical drop due to gravity, high BC slugs allow for tighter groupings at long distances. They also deliver greater energy retention (knockdown power). A higher BC means the projectile slows down less in flight, resulting in a flatter trajectory, translating to less “rainbow” arc. This makes it easier to hit targets at varying, unknown distances without needing to calculate as much holdover.
Made for High-Performance Airguns
They work exceptionally well with modern, high-power airguns, particularly when matched with specific twist-rate barrels to achieve optimal performance.
Top-tier airguns feature advanced engineering focused on superior barrel technology, high-consistency air regulation and adjustability. Apex ELR Slugs’ heavy weight and solid, aerodynamic design require high velocity and power to stabilize, which, when achieved, results in a superior performance compared to traditional slugs.
You have a premium airgun, so use premium ammo designed for it for best results. Missed shots with inferior ammo is always more expensive in the long run.
Shooter Verified
Forget aggressive internet marketing to boost sales. Real, independent South African shooters who chase extreme accuracy daily tried and loved these slugs, for very good reason.
Choosing airgun slugs that have been verified by other shooters is crucial, because slugs are highly sensitive to barrel type, twist rate, and rifle power, making them notoriously “picky” to shoot accurately. Verified or “proven” slugs ensure that you are spending money on ammunition that has demonstrated consistent, high-performance results in real-world scenarios.
These competition-grade slugs weren’t even available for purchase until they have been rigorously tested by competitive marksmen.
Forge & Field designed the Apex series slugs to fill a gap in the air rifle ammo market, focussed on providing South African shooters with premium slugs. But, at a much more affordable price and constant availability. No need to pay for importers’ costs, no more waiting until stock arrives.

Important Notes
We highly recommend a minimum velocity of 830fps for accuracy and stabilisation. This amounts to about 61ft.lbs of muzzle energy, which is considered high power. Of course, you can shoot these slugs with less powerful air rifles. But for precision, consistency and impact, there’s more to it than just having enough energy to push slugs through the barrel.
First of, to shoot 40 grain airgun slugs effectively, you need a high-powered Pre-Charged Pneumatic (PCP) air rifle. According to most experts, preferably one capable of producing at least 40 to 60+ foot-pounds (ft-lbs) of muzzle energy. While they can technically be fired at lower energies, these heavy projectiles require high power to maintain 900–960+ feet per second (FPS) velocity. That’s what you need for accuracy and downrange performance.
Shooting at lower muzzle energies may get the slugs out of the barrel, though they will be very slow and have a “mortar-like” trajectory. Medium-range shooting can require less velocity and energy, so likewise, you will need more energy for high-velocity, long-range shooting.
A standard pellet barrel may, in fact, not be sufficient. You need a barrel with a faster twist rate like 1:16 and a profile designed for slugs to achieve tight groups. You will also most likely need to tune your regulator to high pressures to achieve the necessary velocity.
We do not recommend that you shoot these heavy slugs in underpowered setups like springers, pistols, CO2 airguns, etc.
If in doubt, contact us to discuss a custom tune on your suitable air rifle or for specialist recommendations.
