Why use a single-shot tray? Well, maybe you just want to fire a single shot! It’s easier and faster to snap this tray in than it is to load one pellet into a magazine. Also perfect for youngsters or beginners. Having only one shot forces the shooter to slow down and take their time.
Double-loading
Single shot trays also eliminate the likelihood of the shooter double-loading. Double-loading occurs when a shooter uses a magazine and accidentally loads two rounds in the rifle. Most often this happens with inexperience.
When you cock the rifle, you have to pull the cocking lever or bolt all the way back. If you pull it back far enough, you’ll hear a click and the cocking lever or bolt will stay in the open position (sear engagement.) When you close the cocking lever or bolt again, the rifle is loaded and ready to fire. With double-loading, the cocking lever or bolt isn’t pulled back far enough, so there is no trigger engagement. The magazine cycled and upon closing the cocking lever or bolt you loaded a round into the rifle.
However, the rifle will not shoot as the trigger is not “loaded” (no sear engagement.) So inexperienced shooters will again try to cock the rifle. As soon as you pull the cocking lever or bolt back again, the magazine will cycle. Then, upon closing the cocking lever or bolt, you push another round into the rifle. Sometimes shooters keep cocking without sear engagement and end up with multiple rounds in the rifle, which could cause serious damage to the rifle’s barrel.
We highly recommend that you contact an experienced dealer or repair centre if you suspect multiple rounds jammed in your rifle’s barrel. Using ram rods and other objects could cause even more damage to the barrel when used incorrectly. Air rifle barrels are not as hard as firearm barrels and removing compressed lead from them the right way can be tricky and time-consuming.
Accuracy
Many top bench rest shooters insist on loading their rifles one at a time using a single shot tray instead of a magazine for more accuracy. Magazines don’t necessarily index to exact alignment with the air rifle bore. When they don’t, damage to the pellet can occur, usually in the skirt area since that is the thin part of the pellet.
Obviously, damaged skirts will cause accuracy issues, so many shooters avoid the use of magazines altogether. On the other hand, you can use the single shot tray as a means of troubleshooting when you start to get inaccuracy issues, like “flyers” or a wide groupings. To eliminate possible causes, experienced shooters will test the rifle’s accuracy with no silencer (clipping) and no magazine (feed issues). These are just some steps to take, but often they are the most probable culprits, along with barrel fowling.
