The FX Crown MKII brings more power and even more capabilities to an already near perfect platform. This multi-shot air rifle from FX Airguns is specially designed to be configurable and the Continuum Edition comes in a hard plastic case with a form-fitting foam liner, a 380mm Superlight STX barrel, a 700mm Superlight STX barrel, a stackable ½” UNF FX sound moderator, one new “Side-shot style” rotary magazine, owner’s manual and 3-year, transferable warranty!
It boasts all the sought after features we come to expect of FX greatness: the hammer power adjuster, air flow power adjuster, externally adjustable AMP regulator, ability to change calibers and twist rates through the Superlight Smooth Twist X (STX) barrel and liner system. With all this, as well as the highest capacity magazine in its class (new “Side-shot style” magazine), the FX Crown MKII is solidified as the most versatile and robust sporter stock PCP air rifle available.
Changes the MKII bring include a 20 MOA angle built into the Picatinny scope rail. With air-gunners able to shoot at longer distances, this canting of the scope base at the front is what allows for more usable elevation adjustment in the scope at longer distances.
The Crown Continuum ships with two barrels. One is a compact, 380mm barrel that’s well suited for hunters and those needing a shorter, more maneuverable platform. It also comes standard with a 700mm barrel for competitive shooters (perfect for benchrest) and when barrel length isn’t a concern. It’s an extremely versatile, range- and field-ready tack driver right out of the box. What’s more, FX gave its already-revolutionary Smooth Twist X barrels an upgrade. The latest-production Superlight STX barrels weigh in about a half-pound lighter than the previous versions, yet offer increased rigidity and enhanced performance.
These updated barrels build on FX’s widely acclaimed Smooth Twist X Barrel system. It’s the Swedish manufacturer’s flagship barrel, enabling shooters to change calibers on the same rifle with the appropriate caliber-change kit. It also allows for different liners to be used in the same caliber to provide enhanced performance with specific ammo.
From FX: “Both barrels feature the new FX Superlight STX barrels. The Superlight STX uses a newly engineered and imagined barrel housing to hold the STX liner. The liner is no longer housed in a long steel tube, but rather is now placed in a very sturdy barrel attachment section that results in a more rigid barrel. The strength this design imparts to the barrel is part of the reason the Crown can handle a 700mm barrel.”
FX also updated the Crown’s breech block by replacing the 11mm Dovetail mount with an integrated Picatinny rail. The action has also received further fortification in the form of four set screws – two on each side – for a more rigid and secure barrel mount. As an added benefit, this also allows the scope to remain mounted when changing barrels. Superlight STX barrel shrouds are fixed.
The trigger pull of the FX Crown Continuum is outstanding. The first stage is incredibly light and smooth. On pulling back further, you encounter a very clear, distinct “stop”. That’s the second, release, stage, which has absolutely no creep or slack. Instead a small amount of additional pressure trips the sear with no additional movement. This really is a “glass break” trigger. Of course, the trigger is adjustable for pull weight of both the first and second stages.
The safety switch is conveniently placed on the right of the stock, just behind and above the trigger blade. It works precisely and easily. As expected, the side lever action is buttery smooth. It is light and easy to operate.
This is an surprisingly light air rifle. It shoulders well and points intuitively. The thumbhole stock provides an ideal position for the firing hand: the trigger finger falls into place naturally. The point of balance falls directly through the natural position of the forward hand, just forward of the trigger. Both comfort and cheek weld are facilitated by the adjustable cheek piece. The rubber buttpad is vertically adjustable using a 5mm hex (Allen) wrench.
The quality of fit and finish on all metal parts is flawless. The Minelli-manufactured laminated wood stock, in bold, almost startling “Yellowjacket” colors, also exhibits the highest standard of finish. There’s beautiful stippling in the right places, combined with a luxurious satin finish over the remainder of the stock.
