Description
SUMATRA 2500 500CC PCP AIR RIFLE 5.5MM
If you’re looking for a high power, magazine-fed PCP, the Samyang Sumatra 2500 500cc PCP 5.5mm air rifle is for you. With excellent accuracy over a wide range of pellets and slugs, it is famed for its capability with super-heavy pellets. Originally intended to be a hunting air rifle, the Sumatra 2500 has since become so much more – a sport rifle, a leisure rifle, a piece of art that is a joy to handle and behold.
The real strength of the Sumatra 2500 is it’s ability to generate high muzzle energies with heavy pellets. Muzzle energy recorded in tests peaked at nearly 58 ft/lbs with H&N Baracuda Match 21.14 grain pellets. This is huge for a 5.5mm air rifle and isn’t even near the limit of pellet weight the rifle is comfortable with. The muzzle velocity recorded during this test was with the power adjustment wheel positioned at its lowest setting.
Here are some results of shot tests with Eun Jin 28.5 grain pellets at 3000psi:
First shot: 1113 fps
Second shot: 1100 fps
Third shot: 1093 fps
Fourth shot: 1075 fps
Fifth shot: 1069 fps
Sixth shot: 1067 fps
Now, 28.5 grain pellets shot at a velocity of 1113 fps translates to a Muzzle Energy 0f an insane 78.41 foot-pounds!
With the power adjustment wheel, the shooter can tailor the velocity output according to the target size and pellet weight. Naturally, the Sumatra 2500 will sling a very wide variety of pellets at mind-blowing speeds, but remarkably still retains respectful accuracy. Lighter pellets will deliver faster velocities, while heavier pellets will give slower velocities, but with more energy.
From a distance, the Sumatra 2500 500cc looks more like an “over and under” shotgun than an airgun! This, of course, is due to the double air tubes under the barrel, giving more air and an appearance that’s all its own. The finish of the metal parts is excellent, with strong, deep bluing for some parts and glossy black paint for others.
The receiver, cocking lever and trigger are all castings, with the receiver having a deeply-inletted hunting scene on either side. With a well finished ambidextrous wooden stock, with finely-figured checkering, an adjustable cheeckpiece and a rubber buttstock for extra comfort, the Sumatra 2500 is a beautiful looking rifle. Pictures do not do it justice.
The Sumatra balances well when brought to the shoulder and gives a good cheek weld. When shooting, it doesn’t feel as heavy as it weighs. This means high shootability and ease of use, as was intended in a rifle originally made in Korea for hunting and pest control. The 6 shot magazine makes loading easy and gives rapid follow-up shot capability. These magazines allow for longer pellets than most 5.5mm magazines on the market.
The Sumatra 2500 air rifle also features double feed protection, which is certainly a good practical advantage of the Sumatra over other clip-fed air rifles that can allow the gun to be “double loaded” if the shooter loses track of the loading and firing sequence.
The trigger of the Sumatra 2500 air rifle is adjustable for pull weight, while the manual Cross Trigger safety is conveniently located just behind and above the trigger. The underlever cocking is a natural action and amongst the most loved features of this stunning rifle. It is fitted with a very robust set of simple iron sights, with the rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. An 11mm Dovetail rail for fitting optics is also present.
These rifles do need silencers if sound levels may be an issue to the shooter. There’s no surprise about this as the Sumatra 2500 air rifle uses a lot of air for each shot, propelling pellets up to supersonic muzzle velocities. The muzzle is threaded for an aftermarket silencer and this would undoubtedly make a big difference to the report.
The 500cc models give between 22 to 50 accurate shots, depending on power setting and pellet weight, before an air top-up is needed. Be sure to get a cylinder or a high pressure compressor and the associated connecting equipment to make sure you always have the air you need to enjoy this powerhouse rifle to the fullest.
For its combination of beauty, power, quality, usability, value and performance, the Sumatra 2500 500cc air rifle is in it’s own class!
